About

Bomb or Boom asks one question about every film before it opens: does it make its money back? You call it bomb or boom, and later the box office says whether you were right.

We estimate break-even at two and a half times the production budget. That is the rough shorthand the industry uses for what a cinema release has to take before it is in profit, once the marketing campaign and the cinemas' share of every ticket are behind it. It is a benchmark rather than a calculation: the real figure turns on marketing spend and distribution deals that studios do not publish. Streaming and home video are not in these numbers at all, so every verdict here is an estimate from public figures.
